ABOUT US
About Us l A Message From the President l Misson & Aims l Officers

Soroptimist International of Sacramento was founded in 1923, the fifth Soroptimist club to be established and currently the fourth oldest club still in existence. We are proud to be part of Soroptimist International which was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California and is now a global organization with more than 75,000 members in more than 122 countries and territories worldwide. Soroptimist is a coined word from the Latin meaning “Best for Women”. Our mission is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

The legacy of our Sacramento Club and Soroptimist International is inspiring. In 1923, women had only had the right to vote in the United States for three years. Early 20th century America viewed a woman's role as primarily in the home and viewed men's roles as public, in the workplace and the community. When I think about the women who chartered this club in 1923, I recognize them as agents of change. They were working professionals who were progressive for their day. Instead of waiting for men to welcome them into their clubs, they established a club themselves. They pushed back on the social norms of their time and created leadership roles otherwise unavailable to them. They did all of this because they saw a need in the community they loved. This is the tradition we follow, the legacy these women left us. It is a legacy of social responsibility and a legacy of love.

It is my sincere hope that as we enter our 96th year, we will be newly inspired by this legacy. May we be inspired by the greater organization we belong to and the collective impact Soroptimists have made worldwide. May we always be looking for new paths to reach the ever changing and diverse community we live in and love, just like those Soroptimists in 1923.

Last year, Soroptimist International of Sacramento raised $46,450 through our fundraisers. We provided $30,000 in Grants to other community non-profits, we awarded $15,000 in scholarships to college students and $6,750 in Live Your Dream awards to women returning to school and who are the sole source of support for their family. Our club also continues to be involved with many hands-on service projects, including our Soroptimist Dream It Be It program, Career Support for girls which empowers them to break cycles of poverty, violence and abuse.

We appreciate the support of our community as we work to improve the lives of women and girls and we always welcome new members who want to join in this noble work. It is my sincere honor to serve as President as we enter our 96th year and live out our 2018/2019 theme, “Leaving a Legacy of Love”.

In Gratitude,

Sarah Lee
President 2018-2019
